Executive summary

UNICEF Bangladesh partnered with Mint Onion to design An Assessment on Coverage of Basic Social Services in Bangladesh, a 20-page publication translating large-scale, data-driven research into a clear, accessible, and actionable resource for policymakers and stakeholders.

The assessment, conducted in collaboration with the Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) and the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), analyzed data from over 200,000 households nationwide. Mint Onion’s role was to transform this complex evidence into a cohesive visual narrative, suitable for both print and digital distribution, while maintaining clarity, neutrality, and institutional credibility.

Challenge

The assessment addressed a wide range of essential social services impacting child wellbeing and equitable development, including nutrition, maternal health, education, public health awareness, and access to clean water and sanitation.

The core challenges included:

• Communicating complex, multi-sector data clearly and responsibly
• Ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences, from policymakers to development partners
• Maintaining consistency and clarity across a wide range of indicators and services
• Designing a publication flexible enough for both print circulation and web use
• Supporting evidence-based decision making without overwhelming the reader

The publication needed to inform action while remaining grounded, impartial, and easy to navigate.

Solution

Mint Onion designed a structured, visual-first publication based on a custom design system that translated large-scale data into a clear, digestible narrative.

The approach focused on three core elements:

• Structured Visual Communication – A clean, modular layout system guided readers through complex findings in a logical progression.
• Custom Visual Language – A complete set of 30 original, custom-made icons representing key services and indicators, a series of bespoke illustrations and simple data-visualization elements.
• Print- and Web-Ready Execution – The final publication was delivered as a dual-purpose asset, optimized for both print production and digital distribution.
